I live in a small community that has a "social set" of sorts. The entire bunch reminds me of the citizenry of River City, Iowa, in the movie version of "The Music Man." There's a local version of Mayor Shinn and a large women's club that dominates many social events in this area. Trouble is, women's clubs have a well-deserved reputation for being full of back-stabbing b-i-t-c-h-e-s, and this one is no different.
I won't bore you with the long version of the story, but a recent election turned into a series of lies being circulated about me, which led me to vehemently refute those lies and, in the process, irritate enough women with my valiant efforts at self-defense that I was not selected for a prominent position.
Basically, you can think of me as Marian the Librarian, surrounded by Eulalie Mackechnie Shinn and her little gang of gossipers and liars.
Although two members of the nominating committee, including the chair, had assured me that I was the only viable candidate, and both had encouraged me to run, the incoming moose-shaped president wanted her boring, insipid, prissy friend elected instead. So The Moose convinced her friend to toss her hat in the ring at the last minute, in spite of the fact the friend was also on the nominating committee.
Guess who won. No wonder I feel a little irritation.
Adding insult to injury, no one on the nominating committee, including the chair who had encouraged me to run, bothered to let me know that I had not been chosen.
This then led my husband to decide that we will NEVER associate with this group again.
Not that I liked this bunch of River City-i-ziens...there are some good folks in the group, but far too many are bunch of ignorant, arrogant people. Regrettably, this decision also means my husband loses out in terms of social interactions with a number of buddies he plays golf with. It was not my choice for him to quit golfing with them, but that was his way to support me after my being shat upon.
Any answers? Advice on this will be helpful, if you are into that sort of advice giving.
